The Roles of XML and RDF
نویسنده
چکیده
The World Wide Web is possible because a set of widely established standards guarantees interoperability at various levels. Until now, the Web has been designed for direct human processing, but the next-generation Web, which Tim Berners-Lee and others call the “Semantic Web,” aims at machine-processible information.1 The Semantic Web will enable intelligent services such as information brokers, search agents, and information filters, which offers greater functionality and interoperability than current stand-alone services. The Semantic Web will only be possible once further levels of interoperability have been established. Standards must be defined not only for the syntactic form of documents, but also for their semantic content. Notable among recent W3C standardization efforts are XML/XML schema and RDF/RDF schema, which facilitate semantic interoperability. In this article, we explain the role of ontologies in the architecture of the Semantic Web. We then briefly summarize key elements of XML and RDF, showing why using XML as a tool for semantic interoperability will be ineffective in the long run. We argue that a further representation and inference layer is needed on top of the Web’s current layers, and to establish such a layer, we propose a general method for encoding ontology representation languages into RDF/RDF schema. We illustrate the extension method by applying it to OIL, an ontology representation and inference language.2

The Semantic Web - on the respective Roles of XML and RDF
The next generation of the Web is often characterized as the “Semantic Web”: information will no longer only be intended for human readers, but also for processing by machines, enabling intelligent information services, personalized Web-sites, and semantically empowered search-engines. The Semantic Web requires interoperability on the semantic level. Semantic interoperability requires standards...

متن کاملRDF M&S revisited: From Reification to Nesting, from Containers to Lists, from Dialect to pure XML
The basic result presented is the following: with two assumptions about the intentions behind the RDF model, it can be shown that the RDF model and a model allowing for nested triples and lists of resources and triples, can be mapped to one another (in both directions). This allows to establish a close link between the RDF model and extended models previously suggested (SlimRDF [3], XRDF [4]). ...
متن کاملObject-Oriented RuleML: User-Level Roles, URI-Grounded Clauses, and Order-Sorted Terms
This paper describes an Object-Oriented extension to RuleML as a modular combination of three sublanguages. (1) User-level roles provide frame-like slot representations as unordered argument collections in atoms and complex terms. (2) URI-grounded clauses allow for ‘webizing’ using URIs as object identifiers for facts and rules. (3) Ordersorted terms permit typed variables via Web links into ta...
متن کاملCoParsing of RDF & XML
parsing, coroutines, XML, RDF, inversion RDF/XML is defined using two grammars, that for XML over text, and that for RDF over XML nodes. Conway's classic pipeline compiler architecture is extended to have two coparsers one for each grammar. A direct implementation of this architecture using Java threads for coroutines is presented. An alternate implementation, with the second parser inverted is...
